THE SITUATION.
World Relief has been doing relief and development in Haiti for fifteen years by partnering with local churches. To meet immediate needs, World Relief is mobilizing local churches to provide emergency packs that contain ready-to-eat food, clean drinkable water and blankets. Church volunteers will assist in the relief effort and local churches will act as distribution points for the supplies. Stephan Bauman, Senior Vice President of Programs at World Relief, stated upon arival in Haiti two days after the earthquake, “What devastation to a country that has hung from a thread for so long.”
Sammy Mah, World Relief President, spoke to the World Relief staff twelve hours after the earthquake saying, “We are committed to Haiti for the long haul. We plan to respond to the emergency needs now, we plan to continue to empower the local church to serve the most vulnerable, and we plan to serve long after the debris has settled...now is the time for the church to be the church.”
